Getting started

Get set up before week 1, so the first session goes to learning and not to installing.

  1. 1. Get somewhere you can run C++

The series is in C++. Install a compiler (g++ or clang) and an editor, then check that you can compile and run a program that prints a line. Cannot install anything right now? Use the CodeChef online compiler instead. It runs C++ in your browser, which is enough for week 1.

  2. 2. Make accounts on the judges

Our practice problems live on online judges. Make a free account on each:

  3. 3. Attend, then go down the rabbit hole

Every session comes with a rabbit hole sheet: a chain of questions where each answer opens the next. It is a self-guided way to find out why things are the way they are, not a list to copy answers into. A sheet on time complexity might start like this:

    1. What is the difference between O(n) and θ(n)?
    2. What is that θ symbol even doing there?
    3. What are Big-O, Big-Theta and Big-Omega actually?

Try the questions yourself before you look at anyone else's answer. Problems to solve are mixed in along the way. Missed a session? The recording and slides are added to that week's page afterwards.
